Cancer risk not higher for IVF Moms

By Theresa M. Erickson

A new international review quieted many women’s fears about the link between IVF and cancer. Australian fertility experts gave the results of the study on Tuesday, stating that women who undergo IVF are no more likely to develop breast or ovarian cancer than any other female.

This news is especially comforting since early studies had linked fertility drugs to stimulate egg production with the increased risk of ovarian cancer. One professor noted, “Women who had IVF in the 1980s and 90s are now getting to an age where an increased cancer risk would be obvious but, as the research shows, we’re not seeing it.”

This review is great news for women seeking fertility treatment. Do you think the risk of cancer stopped women from seeking fertility treatment? Will these results change the amount of women seeking treatment?
